About Hamilton Classics Rainwear
Hamilton Classics Rainwear has been trading for over fifteen years, and we still work to the same slogan: waterproof, windproof and pretty.
We make a comprehensive range of ladies’ mackintoshes and capes, and a growing number for men. Under our bespoke range every style is popular with both. Our materials are traditionally made: single-texture rubberised cotton, polyester, nylon-silk and satin, all exclusive to us. Everything is hand made by skilled craftsmen in the United Kingdom, fully waterproof, and made to last.
To keep our prices as low as we can we keep our overheads down, which is why we do not have a showroom. There is a limited number of personal viewings for regular customers, by arrangement.
Ian, and how Hamilton Classics began
Ian was passionate about many things: his military career, Masonic Lodges, mackintosh manufacturing and Hamilton Classics Rainwear, and editing The Mackintosh Society, which began at the height of the mackintosh period in the 1950s. He always said his love of mackintoshes and capes started during his military service.
Ian began his career in the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy in the 1950s, and rose quickly through the ranks. After qualifying he was drafted to HMS Theseus as ships company, embarking with 14 CAG flying Fireflies and Furies in the Korean War. He returned a first class rate and eventually became commanding officer of his ship’s flight. Later he moved to the Ministry of Defence, retiring as Lieutenant Commander.
Ayshea began her career designing communication networks for the Royal Navy, working on the Astute class submarine. When her section moved to Barrow-in-Furness the rain and cold did not appeal, so she left for the internet industry. One day her boss, knowing her passion for dressing up for Royal Ascot and her small collection of mackintoshes, introduced her to a client looking for a photographer and website designer. Soon afterwards Ian and Ayshea began working together on Hamilton Classics and The Mackintosh Society.
Ian Turton, known as Stan, died on Sunday 6 December 2015 after a very aggressive cancer that took only eight weeks from diagnosis. He passed the business to Ayshea Dwyer, his colleague, friend and confidante.
Who makes your mac
Every coat and cape is cut and sewn by hand in our own workroom in England, by the same small team that has made them for years. The cloth is bought on the roll, the measurements are taken from you, and the same pair of hands sees the coat through from cutting to the final press.
